  • PAINT TECHNIQUES

Hard Edge Painting - Use a flat watercolor brush loaded with paint to create even strokes and to build up an even bead (thick edge) around the color. To keep colors from blending, allow an area to dry before applying wet paint to adjacent areas.

Soft Edge Painting - Create soft-edge effects by lightly stroking a dampened brush across wet paint or paint adjacent colors onto damp paper to blend one color into another. Apply a brush loaded with water to the wet paint surface to blur the edge. Try making a long stroke of one color, then immediately paint a lighter or darker color along the stroke edge to create a softly blended highlight or shadow effect.

Overpainting - Decorate a previously painted area by overpainting the dry surface with fine dots or lines. Try creating dots by dipping the tip of a brush handle into paint and then onto the painted surface. This technique is usually more successful if the overpainting is a deeper color than the underpainting.

Double Colors - Double load a brush by dipping opposite sides of the brush hair in different colors. Use for unusual painting strokes or dab repeatedly for unusual textural effects.

Pressure Variations - Vary the painted line width by pressing down harder during the middle of a brush stroke to create a ""thick and thin"" effect.

Mirror Image Effect - Fold a piece of paper or a paper plate in half, then open and paint on one side of the fold. While the paint is still wet, fold the sides together and rub over the outside of the unpainted side to transfer the paint. Open and observe the mirror-image effect. Add more paint and repeat the process to change the image or add details.

  • Although refills are not sold separately, we have DIY solutions below so you can keep the creative fun going!

    • Paper Discs: The paper discs are 6" in diameter. Trace one of your original discs on a paper plate and cut it out.
    • Ink: Washable Crayola Paint diluted with water is your go-to solution!
      • Although we do not recommend removing the nozzles from the ink bottles, dilute the paint with water in a washable paint cup or use a plastic squeeze bottle. Mix the water and paint with a disposable spoon. Use the spoon to drop the paint onto a paper disc to create your masterpieces. Discard any unused diluted paint after use.

  • Have questions about your Color Wonder Magic Light Brush? We have the answers!

    For Best Results:

    Always protect your work surface!

    • The handle will light up and cycle through all the colors. When that is done, press the bristles in the middle of the paint pad for a few seconds. The handle will temporarily light up the color of the paint. Brush the bristles against the paint pad several times. An invisible layer of paint will stick to the bristles. Brush onto Color Wonder Paper and watch the colors magically appear!
    • Between each color change, wipe the bristles with a dry paper towel.
    • To store the unit, snap the cover on to protect the color pads. Since the paint pads will not dry out, the cover does not need to be airtight and replacing the paint pads is not necessary. The paint pads are securely sealed in the unit during the manufacturing process and not removable, so we do not recommend attempting to remove them.

  • Keep designs permanent on fabric and other surfaces when you choose Crayola products with non-washable pigments:

    • Crayola Acrylic Paints, including Acrylic Paint Sticks
    • Crayola Fabric Markers
    • Crayola Fine Point Doodle Markers (ideal for cotton, polyester, leather, & canvas)
    • Crayola Portfolio Series Acrylic Paint
    • Crayola Take Note! Permanent Markers
For added permanency and to fix the color to the fabric, an adult should heat-set the colors before laundering or wearing the garment. Otherwise, washing the fabric before heat-setting, will cause a loss of color intensity.

    To heat-set using an iron
    1.  Set the iron at the hottest setting appropriate for the fabric type.
    2. Cover your work-surface with scrap cloth or rags to prevent unwanted stains.
    3. Turn the fabric inside out, and iron the reverse side of the design with a back and forth motion for 4 minutes.

To heat-set using a clothes dryer, place the item alone in the dryer for 30 minutes on the hottest setting appropriate for the fabric. Do not dry other garments at the same time.

To heat-set using a blow-dryer, use the hottest setting to thoroughly heat the design for 4 minutes.
