FAQ

  • The basic ingredients in Crayola® Markers are water and dye. A common experiment is to use paper chromatography to separate the dyes. When performing this experiment, you will find that not all Crayola Marker colors separate into different colors due to the nature of dyes utilized in creating marker colors. (Brown, violet and green markers work best). For example, only one dye is used to make our red color marker, but a number of dyes are used to make our brown color marker. In a chromatography experiment, the brown will separate into different colors; however, the red will not. A craft involving chromatography is available on our website at Crayola's chromatography craft page.

  • In 1993 we conducted a poll to find out the most popular colors in America. Blue was voted the most popular CRAYOLA Crayon color. Rounding the top ten were red, violet, green, carnation pink, black, turquoise blue, blue green, periwinkle and magenta.

In 2000, we did another Crayola Color Census, and blue again reigns as number one! Six other shades of blue finished in the Top 10 including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue.  The other colors rounding out the list included purple heart, caribbean green and cerise.
  • If the lights and/or spinning features are not operating as expected, the following reset tips are often successful.

    1. Check to be sure the batteries are installed properly. Reactivate the unit by sliding the black on/off switch on the underside of the base. The "on" position is indicated by a straight line and may need to be reset by turning it off and back on twice.

    2. Remove the center drawing surface, which must be in place for the center lights to work, and firmly push it back into place.

    3. Check the red gear ring on the plastic dome to be sure it is flush against the lip. Place the lid on the base.

    4. Activate the light feature by moving the silver slider switch to the right. Activate the dome rotation by pressing the silver button. See product instructions for additional details.

    Additional tips:

    5. Glow Dome Markers are attached to the cardboard packing located at the bottom of the Glow Dome/Dome Light Designer box. Opening the box from the bottom should assist in locating the markers.

    6. Room lighting should be dimmed for the Glow Dome/Dome Light Designer lights to show up.

    7. The unit will turn off automatically after one hour and may require the above reset tips.
  • Crayola® did not invent the crayon. The "modern" crayon originated in Europe, initially made from a mixture of charcoal and oil, later replaced by powdered pigments. Wax was later substituted for oil, making the sticks sturdier and easier to handle.

In 1902, Crayola Crayons were invented by Binney & Smith and first offered for sale in 1903. The trade name "Crayola" was coined by Mrs. Edwin Binney, combining "craie" (French for chalk stick) and "oleaginous" (oily).

Crayola manufactures over 3 billion crayons each year, primarily made from paraffin wax and color pigment. Learn more about Crayola's colorful history on Crayola's history page.

  • The Marker Adapter is located inside the rip cord handle, so it may seem hidden. It comes packaged inside the handle and can be removed just by pulling on it
